This course is to teach you how to treat those suffering from pelvic floor dysfunction.
The pelvic floor supports the uterus, bladder, and colon. In men of course this only includes the bladder, and the colon. The muscles that make up the pelvic floor prevent incontinence of the bladder and bowles, prevent prolapse and are also important in sexual function.
Patients with pelvic floor dysfunction deal with a lot of challenging and frustrating symptoms.
These include:
1) Pelvic Pain
- Chronic pain in the pelvic region, which may be constant or intermittent.
2) Urinary Issues
- Incontinence: Involuntary leakage of urine.
- Urgency: A sudden, strong need to urinate.
- Frequency: Needing to urinate more often than usual.
- Hesitancy: Difficulty starting urination.
- Incomplete Emptying: Feeling that the bladder hasn’t completely emptied after urination.
3) Bowel Issues
- Incontinence: Involuntary leakage of stool.
- Constipation: Difficulty or infrequent bowel movements.
- Straining: The need to strain excessively during bowel movements.
- Incomplete Emptying: Feeling that the bowels haven’t completely emptied after a movement.
4) Sexual Dysfunction
- Pain During Intercourse (Dyspareunia): Pain or discomfort during sexual activity.
- Decreased Sensation: Reduced sensitivity in the genital area.
- Orgasm Difficulties: Difficulty achieving orgasm.
5) Pressure or Heaviness
- A sensation of heaviness, pressure, or a bulging feeling in the pelvic area, often described as feeling like something is falling out of the pelvis.
6) Lower Back Pain
- Chronic pain in the lower back that may be related to pelvic floor muscle issues.
7) Muscle Spasms
- Involuntary contractions or spasms of the pelvic floor muscles.
8) Painful Bowel Movements
- Pain during or after bowel movements, which may be associated with muscle tension or spasms.
9) Pain in Other Areas
- Pain that radiates to the abdomen, hips, or thighs.
10) Pelvic Organ Prolapse
- A feeling of pressure or fullness in the pelvic area, sometimes with visible protrusion of pelvic organs into the vaginal canal.
